In my last post, I wrote about the loss and memory of my grandmother. During the time of the funeral and being with family, a very special day occurred: my birthday. It's still hard to fathom, but I turned a quarter of a century old. The big 25. I can now rent a car without much trouble, and I'm a year away from needing to find my own health insurance. That's not something I'm really looking forward to, though.
Now, before everything that happened, I really had no plans for my birthday. Getting together with family up here in Montana was about as close as it came to a big celebration. While I love my friends here, I'm not a huge club or bar goer, so getting wasted wasn't all that exciting of a thought. The only I considered was caving in to my bestie's wishes and heading to Vegas for a weekend. Sadly, I have no money to do so, so that was out of the question. Either way, I'd planned to have a small, quiet birthday.
I still got that, as we were driving back home and couldn't really stop anywhere. But I did have one request. Old Navy. On the way home, my parents obliged my need for clothes and we managed to stop at an Old Navy in Utah. I had a deadline for how long I could shop, and and I stuck to it. Thirty minutes, and my mother's generosity, got me seven long-sleeved t-shirts, and one short-sleeved one. I'm prepped and ready for the wintertime now! After that quick trip, all I had to look forward to was a stop at the Olive Garden in Idaho Falls. If you don't know me, you don't know how much I love Olive Garden. If possible, it is high on my list of places to stop to eat and it never takes me long to order. This time around, I got one of those dulcinies so I could have some sort of 'cake' on my birthday. It was DELICIOUS. I wish I could have another right this moment. And our waitress was so sweet and put a little candle on it for me to blow out. The rest of the ride home was quiet, and I tried to sleep as much as I could.
The day before, I got to celebrate with my dad's side of the family. It wasn't everyone, but to those who had a chance to enjoy the yummy cake my thoughtful aunt bought, I thank you. It meant a lot to me. While I enjoy presents and cards, what I love most is to spend time with those I love and create the memories that stick with me for every birthday that comes next.
Now comes the hardest part. While I love my birthday, the reason for it being bittersweet was because of one very important thing: I very proudly share my grandparents wedding anniversary. On November 5th, 1948, my grandparents were married, and in 1987, I was born. It was to be their 64th anniversary this year, and it's hard to believe that they are no longer a part of the living so they can celebrate. But I know they are celebrating in the here-after, all the way over in Hawaii. Or maybe somewhere else.
I may shed tears because of how much I miss them, and the reminder that my birthday celebrates both life and love, but I will never, ever regret that I share this day with them. It is special to me, and I will cherish this day always.

In Memorium: Aloha Oe
On October 31st, 2012, very, very early in the morning, my paternal grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep. The phone startled me so much, I actually sat up in bed, settling a moment after I realized what had happened and moved to head back to sleep. Sounds from downstairs, however, kept me from doing just that. It doesn't take much to understand that an early morning phone call, something abnormal for us, and the sounds of crying equal news of someone's passing. Now, my mind immediately drifted to my maternal grandmother, as she is closer to us and has been somewhat depressed in her thoughts though she tries to hide it. But after a moment of thinking, my gut started to tell me that it was not her, that it was my other grandma who had just been moved into an assisted living facility three weeks prior. Simply checking the caller list on the house phone confirmed my suspicions.
Being tired, and shocked by this news, it took me quite a while to come to terms with the news. All I wanted to do was go to sleep and wake up to another year of Halloween; one that included my grandma. But life doesn't have a magic button that can undo circumstances like this, and with a heavy heart, I waited for my parents to journey upstairs to tell me what I already knew. When they did, I was then left to try and get some sleep and think about how I would go about things. Needless to say, I was restless for three hours after finding out, but finally managed to get another solid hour and a half to two hours of sleep in. When I finally got up, I had to make a decision: stay behind and fulfill my duties at my jobs, or ask my employers for the go ahead to take off that afternoon with my parents.
An hour later, tears shed and anxiety high, I finally called my first place of work. Once again, I am so grateful for the people I work with, and how respectful they are of my commitment to family. Without a hint of worry I was told to go, and I did. My jobs were the only things holding me back, and with the most concerning one relieving me of any pressure, I moved on. I made sure to figure everything out with my second place of work, and with someone lined up to sub my dance classes, I started furiously packing, trying to pack only what was needed--I still needed the bigger duffel-bag. In less than an hour and a half, I was packed and dressed to go, and once a rental car had been procured, we were off to St. George, UT.
The trip down wasn't all that exciting, mostly staring out the window, attempting to watch a DVD on my laptop, and taking little naps. (I get motion sickness pretty easily, so I try not to read or do anything too strenuous that might cause us to have to stop on any trip; Dramamine only helps so much.) Reaching our destination, we unpacked and headed to my uncle's house. I will just say that it was an emotional time, but good for us to get together. My other uncle and aunt joined us, along with another aunt of mine, and... I should probably mention that my dad has two brothers and three sisters; it's a big family. My other aunts and their families wouldn't be arriving until the next day or the day of the funeral, so it was just us and a quiet night of reminiscing and eating a lovely dinner provided by one of the neighbors.
The next day was chaotic, and so much went on my brain was in overload. The hardest part of the day was listening to my uncles and aunts begin the talk of dividing up my grandma's possessions. I don't think I was broken up about looking around the house and not finding my grandma there with us; it was the thought that pieces of her were now being shared amongst the children, and then the grandchildren and so on. She wasn't the one doling out who got what. She wasn't there to smile and nod, or wave a hand in dismissal of the thought that you'd actually thought she'd say no when you asked.
That's what made everything seem so empty.
And the memories that came with everything that I sifted through had me struggling to fight back tears. But those are all memories I'll keep with me, along with the few things I was given or was able to take with me.
The day of the funeral, November 3rd, 2012, was calming, with bright blue skies and a sunny morning. In the Mormon religion, much like several other religions, there is a time for the family and friends to view the body. While I love my interest in the supernatural, this was something I had a hard time with. I fared better this time around, though. Grandma looked lovely, but I had a hard time with my grandpa as, in the right light, he looked similar to Col Sanders. You know, KFC. I still hope he isn't mad about that, but I was too afraid I would walk over to the casket and start giggling and have everyone look at me like I'd just committed a crime. He did look handsome, even if he did impersonate the Col by mistake.
After the main viewing was done, the family was left to do a family prayer, and then it was time for the service. During the viewing and prayer, a special video was played in a loop, showing our family tree and lots of memories in the form of pictures. My cousin did a wonderful job, and I know grandma would be proud.
The funeral service was wonderful, but there were many tears shed. My father gave the eulogy, as as the eldest son, I know it was beyond difficult for him. But it was beautiful, and the message behind it will always stay with me.
As the funeral continued on, and we reached the cemetery, it was time to bring everything to a close. It seemed rather appropriate that there was a military funeral occurring at the same time, as my grandpa was given the same send off. My grandma was going home to her man in uniform, and with a twenty-one gun salute, we concluded the services. It was hard to drive away, to let the groundskeepers do their work, but it was time for family and togetherness.
November 4th brought a very somber day. Many family members had already left to travel back home, and those that were still around were left to do more reminiscing and gather the belongings and pieces of memories to take home with them. In honor of my grandma, we had a dinner of KFC. She loved fried chicken, would make batches of it for her children for family trips, and never turned down an offer to have some. Green jello was also involved, but the best part of the night was the stories my family told. Many of them I hadn't heard before, so it was a happy night. I also celebrated my birthday with my paternal side of the family, something I don't remember doing before, and will elaborate with more in my next blog post.
The ride home on November 5th was a bittersweet one, and a long one at that. But I had time to think, and remember, and enjoy those memories. And of those, I love to think about how much my grandma loved living in Hawaii. Due to my grandpa being in the military, the family often moved around a lot, and one of those moves lead them to Hawaii, and several islands over the time they were there. She loved the beauty of the islands, the relaxing atmosphere, and the landscapes. I can't blame her for loving such a beautiful place, and I have a feeling that is where she and my grandpa slipped off to once he gathered her from the facility she'd been moved to. Spending their eternal life in paradise? I wouldn't say no.
And now, in memory of my grandma, a selfless giver to those in need, but most importantly a lover of family and a dedicated body to her faith, I leave the song to which I sang to myself as we left the cemetery, though I didn't remember all the words.

Life in the Fast Lane
Lordy be. I didn't think life could feel so crazy and yet so good at the same time. But it apparently can. Ever since the new school year started, I have been a busy little be both at the dance studio and at the mall. More so at the mall due to the little fact that I've been bumped up just a little for the holiday season. Yup. I get to be a temporary sales lead during the holidays. I don't know if I'm nuts or what, but it's nice to be building up money for loans and life thanks to all the hours I'm getting. I feel very blessed...
...even if I'm getting sick because of it. Ha! Karma's trying to humble me.
Recently, family visited. The two little nuggets (a.k.a. my nieces) both got sick with some cold/smoke from the fires sniffles. They got better, but I was stuck in the back of the car during a two-day trip to Yellowstone with the sickest of the two. I'm surprised I've lasted this long considering what's spreading around the store at the mall. Hopefully, I won't be knocked out completely by it. My parents insist I get a flu shot, but I really don't like getting those. I feel like utter blah afterwards, and while I know that means it's working, I don't want to take time off because of it; I'm so lame with my excuses.
Anyway, I felt an update was necessary. Don't know when I'll be posting next, but maybe next time it will be about something more exciting.
Later days!

Updates....
They need to happen. Cheese and crackers. I didn't think it had been so long since I'd last posted! I guess I should fill people in on what's been going on.
So, from last I posted, I talked about the Hunger Games books. I can tell you, I devoured the next two books after purchasing the trilogy from Costco. Thank you, Costco! It took me 3 days to finish the second book, and 2 to finish the third and final. Let me tell you this: Go read the series! I am so glad I read the series before watching the movie-which I did recently and rather liked-and was able to complete the entire series. Now I'm ready for the next two movies!
Moving on from the books, June was a very hectic but fun time for me. Since I work at a dance studio, we had two weekends devoted to the year end recital. THAT was a wonderful but very busy time. As sad as it was to see my students head off into summer time, I was happy to have a break from the busy year. It really is ridiculous considering I only had 1... count that... 1 class. I need to not complain compared to other people. The next part of June came with mall work, and getting ready to head down to see family in So Cal. We had birthdays to celebrate, friends to see, and Disneyland to go to. Family time is always fun, especially if I'm able to get my Disney kick in for the year. When it came time to leave, I was sad to leave the state I was born in, but it was time to get home.
The rest of the summer, I taught at the dance studio and worked at the mall. Fun stuff, right? I also house sat, which was, in the best of words, interesting. I was glad to help out, but I don't think I planned for it very well. Next time I will be more prepared! Ha! As July turned into August, the end of classes at the dance studio came and I got to spend a week with my grandma. This was a fun time for me, but I did manage to crack my windshield thanks to construction. Stupid gravel being flipped up by other cars. At first, it was one seal-able crack, and then another starburst that I hadn't found completely cracked up the window. I'm lucky I didn't get worse, but I'm still rather sad that my truck went 4 years without nothing more than a harmless fender bender. I'd hoped to go on for another 2 years without issue. Oh well.
Exiting August and heading into September, I am eagerly, but not so eagerly awaiting the start of school. Some schools have already started, but many of the ones I substitute for are starting tomorrow. I will miss being able to sleep in, especially with the Holiday Season starting at the mall. Oy vey. Here's to another busy season!
In other news, namely resolution updates since it's passed the half year mark now, I would like to say... I suck. Lol. I have not been as diligent with working out as I liked. In fact, after my trip to So Cal, I became rather lazy, only getting activity when I went to work or taught during the summer. I've told myself I've got to get back on track in the next 2 weeks, or I'll be waiting until the beginning of the year to start all over. So far, I have lost 2-3 pounds, and I'm happy about that, but I had hoped to lose between 5-10 by now. Maybe, I'll be able to lose that much before this year ends. Just got to get myself motivated and back into a schedule.
As far as drawing and writing goes, I have been doing well with these. I've been doodling a lot more, and I've been trying to stay motivated with writing. I have several small projects I've been working on, but nothing that's worth sharing. I'm also very OCD and don't want my work stolen or used without permission. Pictures, namely those that are drawn, are one thing, because many are just character designs or characters I use on a website I'm on like... all the time. But written works are hard for me to share. Even my family is surprised when they finally see the notebooks I have.
Anyway, I think this is enough of an update for now. I hope to get a little more involved now that I'm not just lounging around and forgetting that, yes, I do have a blog that needs to be updated. Until next time!

The Hunger Games
Why? Why did I wait so long to read the first book? Oh, right. Money. I can't read a book I can't pay for, and the library seems to always have the books checked out. Luck was not on my side. Thankfully, it was on my mother's. A coworker happened to be finishing up the first book while on break when my mother walked into the break room. After asking politely, my mother was able to borrow the book... and she let me read it first.
How could I have not psyched myself up to go get this book earlier? I was a little skeptical, at first. The books are so popular now, and with the first movie finishing its circulation through the movie theaters, I guess I just didn't want to be another sheep in a flock of many. Now I'm mentally kicking myself. I should have gone with the flock, because I have a new favorite series. I still love my Frank Beddor's version of Alice in Wonderland, and of course I can't put down my Harry Potter series. I also need to finish Brisinger from the Eragon series so I can move on to the last book, Inheritance. But right now, all I want to do is run out and get the entire Hunger Games trilogy... in hard copy! Ugh!
I hate being a bibliophile sometimes. I know the library can be your friend, but I've gotten to the point where I want to have and keep all the books I can bring home. I don't want to have to return the book, and then go back and check it out again when I feel the urge to read through it for a second time. I'm so lazy. I might be a little less lazy for this set. Sadly, the local library has stated that all the copies of Catching Fire have been checked out. Now I have to wait impatiently for the copies to come back so I can snag one. Hopefully, I'll be able to. Until then, I must wait, stalking the library catalog or wondering if my mother's coworker has the rest of the set that I can borrow so that I can finish.
I think I have a set of books to put on my birthday/Christmas list this year. Too bad that's almost 5 months away. Maybe I can save up enough to purchase them on my own. Who knows? Either way, I'm left with having to clear up my long reading list, which is sadly growing longer and longer. I'm still only halfway through Anna Karinana, which has been an almost 7 year read. The good thing is that I still recall what's going on, otherwise I'd have to start all over again. Tag on some of the books already mentioned, and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, and I've got quite a bit to finish. I should probably add in a few Nicholas Sparks books I haven't gotten to yet.
I really need to stop playing games on Facebook.
In any case, I'm sucked into The Hunger Games, and I can't wait to see the movie. I've heard mixed reviews, but still want to see it.
Until next time.

In any case, I'm sucked into The Hunger Games, and I can't wait to see the movie. I've heard mixed reviews, but still want to see it.
Until next time.

A Time for Zen
It's amazing what one song can do. Since I lasted posted, life has been a roller coaster of fun, and also of chaos. Ideas for the blog have been pushed back due to work, some minor stress, and a whole bunch of laziness. This is funny, considering I am trying to keep up with the goals for the year. I am working out more, and even getting a Summer workout schedule put together, and I'm trying to draw and tap into my writing skills. I've had to reign in on the latter two, due to work and the end of the year for substituting and dance stuff, but overall, I feel rather accomplished. Have I lost a ton of weight, yet? Nope. Have I come to terms with a few personal things? You can bet your paycheck I have.
There's still a lot to do this year, but until then, I've been finding ways to relax and ZEN. As a Scorpio, and someone with an already stubborn personality, I need to find that zen. (If you have no idea what I mean by Scorpio.... what rock have you been hiding under? Go look it up.) I bottle things up, let stress eat at me, and sometimes I take things to heart a little too much. Hence, the need for ZEN.
And I've found it.
Being a part of the dance world has many advantages. One, and the only one necessary for this explanation, is the ability to find calming music. Like.... reaaaaallllllllly calming music. Thankfully, there is one song, excluding the song I plan on using for my wedding, that I have loved since the first time I heard it. It's an obsession, almost, and it doesn't matter who sings it. The version below, however, is the best. And so is Jeff Buckley.
Enjoy your ZEN.
